Photo Exhibition and Garden

 We started the day at the Sebastiao Salgado photo exhibition. His exhibition was held at the Hotel DeVille around the corner from us. Some of his photos were placed outside the building which we walk by frequently, and they piqued our interest. He was an amazing photographer who traveled the world capturing many incredible images. He was also an advocate for humanitarian issues and environmental concerns. He and his wife started an agency that reforested parts of the Atlantic Forest and addressed other environmental issues. His work captures so many different world conditions that it is hard for me to relay what we saw. I am attaching some of the photos, but this will not do the exhibition justice. If you are interested in photography, and world issues, I suggest you look up his work.

We spend the afternoon at the Tuileries Garden, our favorite park. From this park you can see the Pyramid at the Louvre, the Eiffel Tower and the Arc de Triomphe, from a distance. The beauty of the flowers, trees, statues and buildings would be enough without these landmarks. 

We stopped for some gelato on the way home and picked up our favorite little desserts for after dinner. The temperature hit the upper 70's today and it was lovely. It has been a bit chilly, and damp lately so today was a welcome change.

We arrived

Our travel philosophy has been we need to travel while we still can. Early this evening we were both questioning whether we waited too long. Our red-eye was delayed by two and a half hours so we didn't take off until @1 AM. Neither of us got much sleep. It is amazing how uncomfortable airplane seats are.  Our apartment is on the third floor, which we knew, but lugging suitcases up stairs was a challenge.  The woman who met us at the apartment locked herself out so we passed the time in a nearby Cafe until she got the key. It ended up being a good thing. Some coffee and French onion soup refreshed us. I was able to skip a nap. Jack took a short rest and we pushed ourselves out. We walked to Notre-Dame which is about 10 minutes from us. The area is lovely and the outside of Notre-Dame is amazing.  We will tour inside another day.  Our day began with a buffet breakfast. Everything was great but we did have to ask what a couple of things were. As we were heading to the American cemetery, we passed a beach monument and the Omaha Beach Museum.  We stopped at each and learned more about the great sacrifices our soldiers made to save democracy. The cemetery was beautiful and overwhelming.  Over 9000 soldiers are buried here. It is hard to fathom the loss that occurred in just a few days. The grounds are carefully maintained and are next to the water. It is a beautiful setting.  Our next stop was Rouen to see a Cathedral Monet painted. It is quite impressive.  Some of the statues inside are from the 12th century.  The town of Rouen is large. The center has remained quaint with old churches and homes.
