Today was all about waterfalls. We spent a few hours in Plitvice Lakes National Park. We logged 14,000 steps by noon but it wasn't overwhelming. This included climbing uneven wooden stairs and walking across wooden paths suspended over running water. There were also quite a few rocky paths and inclines.. As challenging as some of it was at times the grandeur of the scenery distracted from any discomfort. Joette, if you are reading this, it's how you trick me when we go for bike rides to get me to ride further, only on a grander scale.

The color of the water is unbelievable as are the waterfalls. Every time we rounded a bend another waterfall appeared. An added bonus is that the trees are starting to turn color and some of the colors are reflected in the water. The water is crystal clear and reflects the surrounding colors beautifully. The pictures do not do it justice but I am posting a lot of them today because I can't decide what to cut. The green of the water seems unreal it's so beautiful. Any of my hiking friends, (Laura, George) should add this to their bucket lists.

The day started with a chill in the air and it was in the upper 30s. I wasn't expecting to break out the winter coats this early, but I was glad we had them, At the end of the hike it warmed up and we no longer needed coats. We had an early start this morning which allowed us to miss the crowds. This was fortunate because we stopped frequently to take in the scenery and take pictures. While walking we had to keep an eye on the ground to make sure we didn't trip on uneven boards or rocks. We did get lost briefly, of course we did, but it was only because we didn't realize we finished the trail. We ended up walking an additional half an hour but it allowed us to chat with another couple who was in a similar predicament. They were from England and seemed very nice. We ran into them later at lunch and learned his brother lived in Philadelphia for 27 years. He mentioned he was an Eagles fan but we liked him anyway.

We had a lovely lunch. I ordered a local salad that included grilled pieces of local cheese on top of salad. It was different from anything I've had before and it was delicious. We then ventured to a little town called Rastoke that is embedded with waterfalls. The houses literally have waterfalls running under and next to them. They have a little tourist area but it was closed today. We were able to get the feel of it and it is charming. About 30 people live in the town.

When we returned to the apartment our host greeted us with homemade apple strudel and asked if we'd like a cup of coffee with it. We accepted and thoroughly enjoyed this wonderful treat while sitting on the porch overlooking the waterfall. Yes, it was idyllic as it sounds and we realize we are so lucky to be having these experiences.

We will be venturing out for dinner since we can stay out past dark now. I'm writing this early as I anticipate being tired by the time we get back from dinner.
