After leaving our restful retreat in Lake Braies we were terrorized by our drive through the mountains to our next locale. Part of the journey involved going though tunnels that resembled caves. Jack just shared that he felt like he had a workout from the drive. He was on high alert and was actively turning the wheel, looking for oncoming cars, and pushing the brakes and gas pedals for 2 hours. The majority of the drive involved hairpin turns with cliffs off to the side (at least they had guardrails} We took the advice of a couple of sources and headed to Sauris for a stop on the way to our destination It may be a lovely town but we just wanted to find a gas station and get on our way. We stopped in the local information center since no gas stations were visible. The place was unlocked but unoccupied. We made ourselves at home and used the rest room. It had an interesting assortment of beer mixed in with cleaning supplies on the shelf. We did not partake but found it worth mentioning.
When the woman returned she seemed surprised to see us but was nice and kind of directed us a couple of towns over to a gas station. We eventually found the gas station and made our way to the next recommended town. This one was worth the stop. It was San Daniele which is famous for it's prosciutto. They have a different way of making it then Parma. We found a small restaurant and followed the guidance of the waiter on what to order. He delivered us each a large plate of prosciutto along with cheese, bread and pickled vegetables. I loved it and I don't usually like prosciutto. We didn't have any difficulty finishing. They are not able to ship to the US but we will try to find someplace that does.
The rest of the journey was uneventful. We made it to Cividale which is a lovely little town that was originally founded by Julius Caesar between 50-56 BC. The B&B we are in was originally built in the 1600s and has been beautifully updated. We are right next to one of the Piazzas and across the street from the statue of Julius Caesar. There is also a Church across the street the rings it's bells frequently. Hopefully, they stop over night. It's nice being centrally located and being able to walk places. It's raining but that shouldn't interfere too much. It did add a little to the the stressful drive earlier today. We are happy that the rain took a break the past few days so we were able to enjoy Lake Braies and the mountains and wonderful views. We'll deal with whatever the weather brings this week.

Most of the first 2 hours of the drive looked like these screen shots.
Random donkeys standing in the middle of one of the hairpin turns. They didn't look happy either.
One bright spot on the ride
More than enough for two!
If you are ever in San Daniele stop here for prosciuttoCividale-bridge over the river

Leaving lake Braies this morning, last shot from the balcony The dog is huge and a fixture at reception.
The ride through the tunnel you posted on Facebook was scary. I would not have done it however the rest is well worth it. (Helen)
