Since it's raining again today we figured the best way to spend a rainy day was in a cave. We went to the Skocjan Caves. https://www.park-skocjanske-jame.si/en/

They were spectacular and unlike anything we have ever experienced. You enter through a long 'regular cave passage. (I could hear Joette saying watch your head since the ceilings were not tall.) Than we entered into the winding, climbing paths and stairs.  It felt like we were in an Indiana Jones movie. There is a walkway that weaves around above a raging river. Remember I mentioned being afraid of heights, oh boy, this was a test. The amazement of what I was seeing outweighed my fear.

The tour took about 2 hours and we were engrossed the whole time. You aren't allowed to take pictures in the cave which is a good thing. I would have been stopping every few feet to try to capture what we were seeing. I have added a couple of pictures from the tour organization and some pictures we took leaving the cave. That was allowed. Not that we were counting but there were over 500 steps in addition to climbing ramps and walking.

When we returned to Ljubljana we had lunch and explored. This town is wonderful, even in the rain. There is a river running through the middle of town. Three bridges connect the two sides of the river. This area is pedestrian only. The architecture is beautiful and there are a couple of churches and numerous shops and restaurants. Some of the old buildings house modern stores. It is and interesting mix of old and new. The town center has a market that includes indoor and outdoor venders along with bars and restaurants. We are staying in a very nice little apartment that is close to the town center. We've been spoiled with good weather up until now so we aren't complaining but, we are hoping for drier weather tomorrow. We didn't pack many clothes so we can't afford to soak through our outfits.

                                                            walkway above the river
The curvy thing along the wall is the path.

More waterfalls just outside the cave-we thought that part of the trip was finished.

                                            By the market

                                                    Inside City Hall
                                                            City shots

                                                        ugly statue

                                            city hall

Church of St. Nicholas the carvings are amazing
close up on the door and statues

Dragon Bridge-one dragon on each corner

In front of our apartment-I'm trying to match the blue theme

  2. The cave is impressive but the walkway looked a bit challenging and intimidating. I like the idea of no cars in the town. It allows more freedom to explore and enjoy.

    1. The walkway was wide enough but looking over the side was scary.

    1. Donna’s afraid of heights as well. She was once again proved herself to be a real trooper by not letting the heights get to her. Donna has pushed herself past her old comfort zones many times this trip. I’m proud of my tour guide!
