We had dinner last night at a restaurant that serves local cuisine. Again the server's English was limited but we were able to communicate. When I asked what type of fish was on the menu, I never heard of it before, she Googled it and showed me a picture of what the fish looked like. Needless to say, I did not recognize it but took a chance and ordered it. It was really good. Jack had venison, also branching out from his norm. He was very pleased with his choice. Once again dinner was a different experience from our norm and it was a great evening.

This morning we went to Udine which is a larger city about 25 minutes from us. We visited their Duomo, (Cathedral), and a castle. There wasn't much we could see at the castle but the folk tradition is that the Udine Castle hill was built by soldiers of Attila so he could see the burning of Aquileia. Research suggests this area was erected in the Bronze Age between 1400 and 1300 BC. As impressive as that is, we didn't see much.

The Cathedral on the other hand was magnificent. The pictures don't do it justice. The frescos and carvings were beautiful.

We tried to go to a small restaurant I found online for lunch. I wanted local cuisine but when we got there they were full, not really but they said they were booked with reservations. We ordered take out and had our first taste of frico, which is cooked cheese. It was delicious but as you would expect, very heavy. It's been raining on and off so we had some down time before exploring a few places near our B&B. There is a Duomo, Temple, and archeological museum all within a very short walking distance from us. The Duomo was very dark and we weren't allowed to take pictures so there isn't much to report there. The Temple was pretty amazing as parts of it were from the 8th century. There were equally impressive findings in the archeological museum. There is a tremendous amount of history here and one of the best parts was that we were the only people in either museum, except for the staff. We had the same experience in Udine. During our visit there we probably only saw 2 other tourists. We like this off the beaten path tourism.

At the archeological museum there were many grave findings including weapons and in one case a horse skeleton buried with a soldier. Here is an example of jewelry found is graves from the second half of the 6th century and first half of the 7th century. These discoveries were all from this local area.

  1. Being "off the beaten path" tourists definitely has its perks. You are experiencing amazing culture through things like visiting the cathedral with all its ornate, exquisite beauty; tasting different foods; and simply walking around and listening. What a great opportunity!
