We are enchanted by this little town. After posting last night we walked to a local restaurant and discovered a charming little courtyard that seemed more like a movie site than a town. The restaurant had wonderful pizza but this is our first experience with having a menu without English options and a waiter that had limited English. We thought we were doing fine until the waiter brought my pizza which was supposed to have artichokes but was made with anchovies instead. After a little confusion, a correction was made. I can eat most things but I wasn't up for anchovies.
We returned to our very charming, comfortable B&B. The Church across from us stopped ringing the bells at 11 but started again at 4AM. They chimed the hour regularly until 7AM when they rang about 100 times. I stopped counting at about 70. I have no idea why they rang so many times but I guess that's part of the town's charm.
We had a lovely breakfast at the B&B and headed to Trieste. We started our tour at the Miramar Castle which is right on the Adriatic. The castle belonged to Maximillian who also had property on an island we visited in Croatia. This castle was much more impressive. It is situated on beautiful grounds but we limited our exploration to the castle itself. It is beautiful.
From the castle we headed to the town of Trieste. We weren't too impressed when we first arrived but once we ventured to the Centre, we saw the Piazza and impressive buildings that previously housed many of the important activities of the past. The city is in the middle of preparing for a large sailing regatta so the center was cluttered with all the promotional pop ups that go along with that. In my opinion, it really took away from the grandeur of the setting. Trieste is located right on the Adriatic but most of the view was blocked by the temporary structures. All in all, I wasn't a big fan of the city but I'm sure if we visited another time, and avoided the parts of the city we traveled through to get to the Centre, I might have a different opinion.
We were both very happy to return to Cividale and our B&B and are looking forward to exploring the city a bit this evening.
Birds on a rock near the castle. Let me know if you have any idea what they are.
Trieste
Miramar castle is beautiful. Its location, the gardens and the intricate details of the rooms and pieces are awesome.
