We spent the day at Mljet National Park which is an island that includes two saltwater lakes. We took a ferry from Korcula to the island which took aout 45 minutes. We are not generally lake people but this place could cause us to convert on occasion. I should have read the information more closely and realized you are supposed to hike in National Parks. Neither Jack nor I are hikers but at least he was wearing appropriate footwear. Sandals were not the best choice for me. After we walked a bit in Mljet and enjoyed it's beauty, the color of the lake was an incredible shade of green, we took another ferry. There is an island in the middle of the lake which is in the middle of the island of Mljet. The island is called St. Mary's and is the home to a monastery that was built in the 1200's. There were a couple of small buildings around the property which we guessed were old chapels. The setting is beautiful and it was a wonderful way to spend the day. We packed a lunch and found a beautiful place to eat it under a tree by the lake. Jack enjoyed a swim when we were there.
We spoke with a couple from Chicago today. Contact with American's has been very limited on this trip. We had a long chat with a couple from Germany and a young lady from Poland and I figured out how to use the pay toilet near the monastery. You wouldn't think monks would charge you to use the toilet but apparently it's a thing.
We returned back to the apartment to enjoy the incredible view we have from our balcony. Jack is making Prosciutto Ravioli we picked up from the grocery store and we are looking forward to a quiet night. As I'm writing this I can hear the water lapping against the side of the inlet. It's a lovely sound.

Your views from the places you are staying are spectacular.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful and excellent description. You may have a future as a travel writer! Looking forward to more.
ReplyDeleteWell, Donna, I'm finally catching up on all of your blog posts and thoroughly enjoying them! I'm sure after the months of detailed planning you did, it's great to be actually living the experience--amazing views, great meals, beautiful old churches and other great architecture, and cats (I know I would appreciate them more than you, but it's nice that you included pictures of them :) ). You seem to be having a nice mix of typical tourist activities (especially love the picture of you in the Iron Throne--hang that in your home :)) and off-the-beaten-path adventures. Although you note that all of the climbing has been challenging and exhausting, I'm glad to hear that you have been able to do it. I look forward to your future posts and wish you good health, good weather, and more great times!
ReplyDeleteSorry--I didn't know that would come up as anonymous--Janine
DeleteWonderful views. You did a remarkable job ( I'll keep that in mind).(Helen)
