It's good we rested up the past few days because today took up a lot of energy. We started with the sunrise from our balcony in Stomorska. It was beautiful. We were on the 8AM ferry to Split and our travels went smoothly as we drove to Trogir. Trogir is a very interesting town with a mix of an old town combined with markets and stores. We stopped for brunch and were a little confused by the mix of tourists and children. Our waiter explained that there was a primary school a few buildings down and the students were on recess. Some of the kids were playing handball against one of the old buildings and some were doing cartwheels and trying to open cabinets that housed restaurant equipment for businesses that weren't open yet. It was a little surreal but it appeared to be business as usual. We did a brief self guided tour that included walking around an old fortress and exploring St. Lawrence Church. The city is right on the Adriatic and very impressive.

From Trogir we drove to Primosten which is a beautiful place. It's beach looked lovely and the street was lined with restaurants and our favorite, gelato places. There is also an old town that was very charming and combined old world with shops. We might return here for a day trip.

Next we tried to find our way to our place on Murter, the island we are staying on. We made it most of the way but weren't able to find our house. The GPS was taking us down roads that we knew weren't right and weren't passible. Our hosts don't speak English but Whats App is a beautiful thing and works well with translating. Once we got a general idea of where we were, we stopped and spoke with 3 people who tried very hard to help us, we were able to give our host a general idea of where we were and they came to meet us.  We were in some type of camp that may or may not be connected to the nudist beach on the island. Only one of the people we were speaking with spoke English. They were all clothed in case you were wondering.  I was able to show them where we were supposed to be and it was interesting watching them debate how to get there. In case you are wondering, bullshit is said the same in Croatian.  We were able to find our way to the main road where our hosts met us. They lead us to the house.

OMG what did I do! We never would have found the house and are worried about finding our way out . We will only be able to come and go in daylight as the road is narrow, windy and not paved. Nothing is marked. Our hosts don't speak English but were very helpful in finding us and leading us to the house. Our goal tomorrow will be to find our way out and back again.

Our hosts showed us around starting with the space that holds the refrigerator. It isn't in the house. This really freaked Jack out and added to his questioning of how long we can stay here. The house itself is quaint. It has a kitchen, sitting area, bedroom and bathroom. It has a bonus outside shower and outside toilet. The outside toilet does have a door but keeping it open could be optional because we are in the middle of nowhere. There are a toilet and shower inside as well

We were shown the path to the beach which is somewhat steep and rocky. We didn't go all the way down but were pointed in the general direction of the water. We returned to the house and were met with some rajkia (homemade brandy) and home made wine. They also brought out some antipasto and rolls. The hosts called their son who speaks English and he was able to walk us through the basics of the house. They were all very nice and helpful but we are a bit freaked out about how we are going to navigate this place. I walked down to the beach but it was not an easy path to follow. It's about a 15 minute walk down a steep, rocky path. Jack decided to stay at the house and unpack. When I finally got to what I thought was our private beach there was a naked couple there and another couple in the water. I don't know if they had anything on.  My first thought wasn't concern about them being there or their lack of clothing, it was how did they get there and was there an easier path to the beach. Despite our increase in exposure (no pun intended) to nudity on beaches, I wasn't comfortable approaching the couple and asking how they got to the beach. Tomorrow is another day and we may attempt the path again.

As the afternoon progressed we relaxed a bit. This place is incredibly beautiful. The setting can't be beat and it is definitely peaceful. As I'm writing this I can hear the Adriatic moving on the shore. It is competing with Jack's snoring at the moment but since he did all the stressful driving I won't complain. This is definitely a to be continued story. I'm hoping when we venture out tomorrow it won't be as bad as we fear. As you know we have been in some tight spaces this trip and I'm sure we'll be able to navigate this as well.

Trogir, people live here in old town. It seems like no one has dryers in Croatia. All of the houses we've past, regardless of size or apparent wealth have everything hanging on lines.

  1. I'm glad you finally made it safely. Where on the island of Murter are you staying?

  2. The pictures are beautiful. If that's the only path to the beach the swing on the porch looks comfy. Kudos to you guys for the roads and navigating the language barriers. (Helen)
