I can't believe this is our last day. We fly out early tomorrow morning so we are spending the night at a hotel near the airport that has a shuttle. It's a swanky old place We returned the rental car so the end feels real. I'll try to summarize everything after we get home and settled but the bottom line is this has been an amazing adventure. I am so happy I kept this blog so we'll be able to go through it and remember everything we've done. It is a bit of a blur right now. I do remember what we did today. We started with a nice breakfast at our hotel in Argegno and then drove to Cernobbio. This is a lovely town on Lake Como that we passed on the way to the hotel. It's very small but managed to fit in three churches. It was beautifully landscaped and is home to a very exclusive hotel we weren't able to get near, and some large villas. The downtown was charming and home to assorted restaurants and stores. We were going to have lunch here but decided to get ...
We started today with a lovely breakfast at the hotel. From there we ventured out to Cortina d'Ampezzo where the 2026 winter Olympics are being held. They are in preparation mode. The city is surrounded with equipment indicating a lot of work is being done. It is Sunday so not much was happening work wise. Walking through town we encountered a band performing in the square. We don't know what it was about but it was fun to listen to them. Something was happening at the local Church since some of the folks were dressed in costume. One man appeared to be standing guard outside the Church during the service which seemed a little different. I wonder if he still had to attend Mass of if this counted. . Most of the stores were closed since it is Sunday, and we were told that it's too early for Olympic souvenirs, so that was a little disappointing. From Cortina we traveled to Lake Misurina where we had a picnic lunch next to the lake. It was a comfortable temperature but there w...
We decided to add one more country to our trip and drove to Switzerland this morning. Lake Lugano in Switzerland is about 45 minutes from Argegno so we thought it would be a good place to go for lunch. Before lunch, we took a funicular ride to the top of Monte San Salvatore, Switzerland. The forecast was calling for clouds and possible showers so we were pleasantly surprised that it was clear when we arrived in Switzerland. The funicular ride was scary. The tracks looked ancient but we made it up and down safely. The view was amazing. We could see Lake Lugano and the surrounding cities. There was a church at the top of the mountain that required us to climb many stairs to reach it and the top of it's tower. I was proud of myself for climbing to the top of the tower. It actually wasn't a bad climb, especially when compared to some of the earlier tower climbs we've encountered. There were real stairs and far less than 100 of them. The view was definitely worth the climb. ...
