Today's beach time was cut short by a thunderstorm. It was 5:00 so we can't complain. We started the day as regular tourists and visited Old Town Kotor. We are staying just outside of Kotor in Muo. There were a lot of folks from the cruise lines and it was pretty commercial with tons of stores. Besides that it was impressive. Some of the buildings dated back to the 1100s. Some might have been older and if we took the time to do a regular tour we probably would have learned a lot about the site. Instead we had our first homemade gelato, it won't be our last, and coffees. If you ever visit here be warned about the coffee. For some reason they serve Nescafe instant coffee if you just ask for coffee. If you ask for expresso or cappuccino it's fresh brewed. The Nescafe is actually more expensive. We found this odd but the expresso and cappuccinos are good.
We spent a few hours exploring the various buildings and a few shops. It is definitely aimed at the cruise tourists and the prices are higher than local stores but it was an interesting experience, and the gelato was amazing.
In the middle of Old Town there was a cat sanctuary. There are a lot of stray cats in Montenegro and here they have bowls of food and water set up for them. We did notice that the cats were much plumper than other areas we've visited so far.
On the way back to the apartment we stopped at a BBQ place our host recommended. Since we want to limit our times up the steep driveway and the stairs, we stocked up. We bought a rotisserie chicken, a huge stuffed burger, and a half a rack of ribs along with grilled vegetables and assorted salads. There are no prices listed, that we saw anyway, so we were a little nervous when the owner suggested we help ourselves to a beer or other beverage on the house as the burger was cooked. We were pleasantly surprised when the total came to @60 Euros. This will be at least four meals each and everything we've tasted so far was delicious. The people in the place were so nice and suggested we taste a few local items that we might not have tried otherwise. The beer and hot peppers were medicinal and more helpful than cough medicine, according to Jack. He does seem much better today.
After a delicious lunch we headed to our new favorite beach and enjoyed a swim before the thunder started. It's nothing like the Jersey Shore when it comes to thunder. No one seemed concerned so I thought maybe the thunder coming from the other side of the mountain was not a reason for concern. The Jersey girl in me kicked in and we had to leave. It was good we did. On our way back to the apartment it started to pour and the thunder was closer. Even the hardy Montenegrins were leaving the beach and heading home as they got drenched.
One of the cats enjoying the sanctuary, with others in the background.
Jack standing on the draw bridge. He never stood on one before so we captured the moment.
This may have been part of a prison at one point. They had a nice view.
Cruise tour crowd in front of a Church we didn't want to spend 4 euros to see inside.
First gelato picture it probably won't be the last.
Sorry I didn't label all the sites but as as I said we really were not very good at the formal tourist thing. I appreciate your comments but for some reason, most names are not showing. I have a guess for some but can you add your name to any comments if you don't mind. Miss you all!
Great photos. I was wondering when you were going to to go get some rain. That's unfortunate but at least it held off until evening. I see NBYC was represented. (Helen)
